Job Summary and Qualifications

​​The Imaging Student Extern delivers high quality, patient-centered care by performing a variety of delegated basic patient care skills while gaining practical experience and knowledge in imaging principles. Under the supervision of a Registered Radiologic Technologist, the Imaging Student Extern prepares for and assists with x-ray procedures, in accordance with the Extern’s skills/training and the needs of the Department. The Imaging Student Extern must be currently enrolled and in good standing in an accredited school of radiography and can perform higher-level procedures once competency is achieved. ​ 

What you will do in this role: 

  • ​Serves as the liaison between patients and departmental physicians and other members of the support team.  
  • ​Obtains patient histories and screens patients for factors/conditions that may affect the imaging procedure.  
  • ​Transports patients to and from the procedure area.  
  • ​Assists in preparing and positioning patients for procedures. Performs patient verification prior to procedure.  
  • ​Remains sensitive to the physical and emotional needs of the patient through good communication, patient assessment, patient monitoring, and patient care skills. Provides basic patient care and comfort.  
  • ​Notifies Radiologic Technologist of any emergencies or concerns.  
  • ​Assists in imaging room setup and turnover between patients, ensuring a safe and clean environment.  
  • ​Assists with the maintenance and organization of radiology supplies.  
  • ​Performs clerical work as needed, including greeting patients and families, registration, filing, answering and transferring phones, and relaying messages.  
  • ​Maintains confidentiality of all patient care information to assure that patient’s rights are protected.  
  • ​Demonstrates an understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology.  
  • ​Adheres to all facility safety practices.  
  • ​Participates in educational opportunities to develop optimal patient care, enhanced knowledge, and technical competence.  
  • ​​Performs other duties as assigned. ​  
  • ​​Practices and adheres to the “Code of Conduct” and “Mission and Value Statement.”​  

What qualifications you will need: 

  • ​Must be currently enrolled and in good standing in an accredited school of Radiography.  
  • 1+ years of imaging education completed, or as mandated by state of practice.
